House Moving Checklist

It's easy to miss something when you're busy, juggling handover times and paperwork can distract us from the important stuff. We don't want to forget anything on the big day - make sure you've checked everything off your list.

With all the stress and anticipation of moving, it can be so easy to forget something. We've got you covered with this handy check list! It covers all of the important steps: getting information, notifying organisations and people of your move, and making sure you have everything on hand the day of.

The removals process itself

  • List what you are moving by room
  • Plan where it's going in the new home
  • List important moving day information - access, stairs, potential issues
  • Get a competitive quotation to move (call us!)
  • What about cleaning the house you leave (we can do that!)
  • Packing services required? If not buy boxes
  • Confirm moving dates and contact numbers
  • Provide us with any maps and plans 
  • Provide us with a spare key

Clearing out the house and preparing to move

  • Get rid of stuff you don't use! 
  • Reduce contents of fridge and freezer
  • Contact carpet fitters and electricians if needed
  • Clear the loft space
  • Tidy and remove rubbish from garage and shed
  • Collect tools together in a bundle
  • Take down any light fittings, curtains and carpets
  • Label anything not to be moved

People to notify of the move

  • Disconnections of mains suppliers
  • Disconnection for phone lines and Internet
  • Doctor, dentist, optician and vets - get new ones?
  • Your bank, credit card, solicitors and insurance companies
  • Notify TV Licensing, passport control and car licencing and registration
  • Notify your local council electoral roll and council tax
  • Arrange re-routing of post with Royal Mail
  • Notify any creditors
  • Notify children's schools
  • Cancel milk and newspaper deliveries
  • Tell everyone where you are moving to!

For the day of the move

  • Arrange child and pet minders if required on moving day
  • Set aside valuable items and documents for “hand luggage” on the day
  • Put aside toys and games for children and pets on the journey
  • Put together a catering pack for the move and arrival; remember the kettle!
  • Check everything in the house is switched off and locked up
